A Maltese Girl

We’re huge K-POP fans…but our No.1 idol is Kuku!

Yes, we have many favorite K-POP artists, but our ultimate bias—the true idol of our family—is Kuku!

She’s a Maltese girl, turning 3 years old this summer.

We first met Kuku on October 10th, 2022.

My parents’ house was basically a dog haven.
We had Milky, a Lhasa Apso we brought back from the U.S.
Then came Bonnie, a Miniature Dachshund, whom we met when Milky grew older and became bedridden.
Next was Claire, another Miniature Dachshund who locked eyes with me and ended up coming home.
Then Alice, also a Miniature Dachshund, whom we met at the grooming salon.
Bonnie had two pups—Simba and Laura.
Alice also had a puppy, Chocolat.
Later, we welcomed Vivian, a Toy Poodle we met at the grooming salon when Simba and Laura were 2 years old.
Vivian eventually had a puppy too—Rin.

Yes, I know. It’s a lot. I’m overwhelmed just writing it!

At one point, we had eight dogs at home all at once.
It was truly a “puppy daycare,” a full-on dog mansion.
It was my mom’s pride and joy.
Dogs don’t talk back like humans. They’re pure and simply adorable.
So caring for them was never a burden for her.
My dad used to say he worked just to support our dogs!

Growing up in that house, I couldn’t imagine life without a dog.
Neither could my daughter, who was born into a home surrounded by eight of them.
When the two of us moved out and spent a year and a half in a no-pets-allowed apartment, it was rough.

Then, on the night of July 10th, 2022, I had a sudden revelation—
“A Maltese girl!!”
It came out of nowhere, like a divine message. I was honestly shocked.

At the time, we were dealing with a pretty strange and noisy upstairs neighbor, and we were already considering moving.
The only thing I knew for sure was: Our next place HAS to allow pets!

So that very night, right after my “vision,” I messaged our real estate agent.
“We’ll move as soon as you find something. Please look for pet-friendly places nearby.”

A month later, we successfully moved.
On October 10th, a public holiday with no plans, I randomly suggested to my daughter,
“Want to go look at some puppies today?”

So off we went, just the two of us.
At the last pet store we visited, I said, “We’re looking for a Maltese girl,” and then…
Out came Kuku, carried gently in someone’s arms.

My daughter fell in love instantly.
She held Kuku and simply refused to let go.

Of course, I had been saving up a “puppy fund,” just in case.
And now we were living in a pet-friendly apartment.

As I hesitated for a moment, another parent and child walked into the store, asking to hold Kuku too.
The moment my daughter noticed them, she clutched Kuku tighter like, “No way I’m letting go!”

And then we heard…
Kuku was born on July 10th.
Yes—the exact day I got that message from the universe!

It was destiny.
I truly believe she came into this world to tell me she had arrived.

And just like that, Kuku became part of our family.

She’s our ultimate idol.
Our top bias.
Every day, my daughter and I enjoy the best kind of “oshi-katsu”—the art of supporting your favorite.

Even when she’s just lying down, just sitting still, even when she just meets our gaze or asks to be held—
Kuku is the cutest, sweetest, and most precious creature ever.

Yes, I’m a full-on dog mom. And proud of it.

Every morning, Kuku claims my daughter’s pillow as her own.
While I’m in the kitchen making my daughter’s lunch box, I ask her,
“Go wake up your big sister, okay?”

But when I go check on them a few minutes later, they’re cuddled up together, still fast asleep.
Kuku, being a dog, should be up and excited for breakfast, but nope—she’s like,
“Breakfast? Anytime is fine. I’ll just keep sleeping, thanks.”

That peaceful scene is our everyday happiness.
Sometimes I wish I could ditch the bento-making and just crawl into bed with them.

When my daughter and I argue, Kuku jumps between us to stop the fight.
She’s so adorably serious that we just start laughing and forget all about the argument.

Kuku, thank you for always filling our days with healing and joy.
You are our treasure.
Right now, as I write this, you’re stretched out next to me, looking as comfy as ever.

You’ll probably be popping up on the blog now and then—
So I hope you’ll grow to love our little Kuku just as much as we do.
